Baluster Estimator

Railings fail inspection on one number: a 4-inch sphere must not pass between balusters. Enter the run and the baluster width — get the count that keeps every gap legal, and the actual gap your even spacing works out to.

The 4-in rule is the US residential standard for guards. Stair rails measure the run along the slope and use a slightly larger sphere at the tread triangle (4⅜ in in many codes) — check your local amendment before ordering stair balusters.

How it works

Each baluster occupies its width plus one gap. At the maximum legal gap of 4 in with a 1.5-in baluster, the repeating pitch is 5.5 in — so a 12-ft rail (144 in) needs ⌈144 ÷ 5.5⌉ = 27 balusters. The subtlety: with an even count, the real gap shrinks a little — 144 ÷ 27 = 5.33 in pitch, a 3.83-in actual gap — which the results show so you can lay out with a spacer block cut to the true dimension instead of accumulating error baluster by baluster.

Estimates only. Guard rules vary: height minimums, load requirements and the stair-triangle exception differ by jurisdiction and by residential vs commercial use. This counts balusters for a straight run between two posts; corners, gates and stair transitions each need their own run.

Formula & worked example

Formula: Count = ceil(run in inches ÷ (baluster width + maximum gap)). With the 4-in sphere rule and a 1.5-in baluster the pitch is 5.5 in. Actual gap = run ÷ count − baluster width, which is the spacer-block dimension for an even layout.

Worked example: A 12-ft rail: 144 ÷ 5.5 rounds up to 27 balusters, landing on a true gap of 3.83 in. An 8-ft rail takes 18.

When to use this

How to use it, step by step

  1. Measure the straight run between posts in feet.
  2. Enter your baluster's actual width.
  3. Leave the max gap at 4 in unless your code says otherwise.
  4. Cut the spacer block to the actual-gap figure shown, not the maximum.

Another worked example

An 8-ft porch rail at the same settings: 96 in ÷ 5.5 in pitch rounds up to 18 balusters, and the even layout again lands on a 3.83-in actual gap. Short rails carry proportionally more margin — the ceiling function is doing you a favour at inspection time.

Frequently asked questions

How many balusters do I need for a 12-ft railing?

Twenty-seven, at 1.5-in balusters and the 4-in maximum gap. The even layout lands on a 3.83-in actual gap — safely legal, and the number to cut your spacer block to.

How many for an 8-ft deck rail?

Eighteen at the same settings. Shorter runs do not scale perfectly linearly — the ceiling function means small rails carry proportionally a little more margin.

Why 4 inches?

It is the child-safety rule written into US building codes: a 4-in sphere approximates a small child's head and torso clearance. Decks, stairs and lofts all use it; some commercial codes tighten to other gauges.

Metal or wood balusters?

Count is identical — the math cares about width and gap, not material. Metal balusters at ½–¾ in wide actually need MORE pieces than chunky 1.5-in wood at the same legal gap, which surprises people pricing "cheaper" thin balusters.

How do I lay them out evenly?

Divide the run by the count from this estimator to get your true pitch, cut a spacer block to pitch-minus-baluster (the actual gap), and work from both ends toward the middle. Never lay out by the maximum gap from one end — the last space inherits every error.

🪜 Balusters for a staircase?

For the stair itself — risers, treads, run and stringer length — the Stair Estimator works out the geometry the railing has to follow.

Work out the stairs

Do stairs use the same 4-inch rule?

Along the rake, yes for the baluster field; the triangular gap at the bottom rail and tread nosing gets a slightly larger sphere allowance (4⅜ in) in many codes. Verify locally before ordering stair balusters.

How are balusters sold?

Singles at home centres, and in contractor packs of 10–50 for metal balusters with shoes and screws included. Order one pack over the count — colour lots vary and a bent baluster should never be straightened into a guard.
