Final Grade Calculator
Two questions, one tool: "What do I need on the final?" — answered for every letter grade at once — and "If I get X, what's my grade?" for playing out the scenarios.
How it works
Your course grade is a weighted average: current grade × (1 − final weight) + final score × final weight. The points from coursework are already banked — an 85% average with a 30% final means 59.5 points are locked in before you sit the exam. Solving the same equation backwards gives the needed score: (target − banked points) ÷ final weight. If that number is over 100, the target is out of reach even with a perfect paper; under 0, the grade is already secured.
Frequently asked questions
How do I find out what my final is worth?
It is in the course syllabus, usually as a percentage of the total grade ("Final exam: 30%"). If the syllabus lists points instead, divide the final's points by the total course points — 150 of 500 points is a 30% weight.
What if the calculator says I need more than 100%?
Then that target grade is mathematically out of reach — even a perfect final cannot pull the average high enough. Look at the next letter down in the table; it is often still very achievable, and knowing that before the exam beats finding out after.
My needed score is negative. What does that mean?
Your target is already secured: your banked coursework points alone reach it, so any final score — even a zero — keeps that grade. (Still show up: many courses fail students who skip the final regardless of points.)
Does this work with letter grades instead of percentages?
Convert with your school's scale first (A ≈ 90–100, B ≈ 80–89 on a 10-point scale), or use the GPA Calculator for a whole semester of letter grades and credits.
