Sod Estimator

Sod is sold by the pallet and dies by the hour. Measure the lawn once, get the pallet and roll counts with cutting waste included, and have the order placed before the ground is even prepped.

Curved beds and trees eat sod in cuts — 5% covers a plain rectangle, 10% is honest for a lawn with real landscaping in it. Odd shapes: break the lawn into rectangles, run each, and add the pallets.

How it works

Area × (1 + waste) is the order quantity. Pallets cover about 450 sq ft in most regions (some farms palletise 500–540 — the estimator uses the conservative 450 so you never come up short), and a standard small roll covers 10 sq ft (2 × 5 ft). Sod is perishable inventory: farms cut to order, and the pallet that arrives in the morning should be on the ground by evening — which is why the count matters more than the price per foot.

Estimates only. Confirm your farm's actual pallet coverage before ordering — it varies by region and grass type, and the difference between a 450 and a 540 sq ft pallet is a whole pallet on a 2,000 sq ft lawn. A pallet weighs 1,500–2,000 lb; delivery placement matters.

Formula & worked example

Formula: Order area = lawn area × (1 + waste). Pallets = order area ÷ 450 sq ft (the conservative standard pallet). Rolls = order area ÷ 10 sq ft (a standard 2 × 5 ft roll).

Worked example: A 40 × 25 ft lawn: 1,000 sq ft, 1,050 with a 5% cutting allowance — 3 pallets, or 105 rolls bought individually. A curvy 30 × 20 ft lawn at 10% waste orders 660 sq ft: 2 pallets, 66 rolls.

When to use this

How to use it, step by step

  1. Measure the lawn; split curves and islands into rectangles and add them.
  2. Set waste: 5% rectangles, 10% landscaped lawns.
  3. Confirm your farm's pallet coverage before ordering — it varies by region.
  4. Prep and water the soil bed before the truck arrives, not after.
  5. Lay the day of delivery, butt joints tight, and water immediately.

Another worked example

A front lawn renovation, 30 × 20 ft with beds and a tree, so waste goes to 10%: 600 sq ft becomes 660 to order — 2 pallets, or 66 rolls for a pickup-truck job done in two trips the same morning.

Frequently asked questions

How much sod do I need for a 40 × 25 ft lawn?

1,000 sq ft, which with a 5% cutting allowance is 1,050 sq ft to order — 3 pallets at 450 sq ft each, or 105 standard rolls if you are buying retail.

How many square feet are on a pallet of sod?

About 450 sq ft in most of the US (roughly 50 rolls of 9–10 sq ft). Some regions palletise 504 or 540 sq ft. Always confirm with the farm — this estimator plans on 450 so the error, if any, leaves you with spare rolls, not bare dirt.

How long can sod sit before it dies?

In summer heat, sod on a pallet starts cooking within 24 hours and can be lost by 48. Order for the day you lay it, keep unlaid rolls shaded and lightly moist, and never cover a pallet with a tarp in the sun.

Sod or seed — which is cheaper?

Seed costs a tenth as much per square foot and takes a season to look like a lawn. Sod is instant but the default lawn here (1,050 sq ft) runs several hundred dollars in material alone. Bare, high-traffic or erosion-prone areas justify sod; patient, shaded, large areas favour seed.

What waste percentage should I use?

Five percent for rectangles, ten for lawns with curves, trees and beds. Sod cuts cleanly with a sharp spade, and offcuts patch elsewhere — but every curve consumes full rolls to yield partial coverage.

🪴 Prepping the soil under the sod?

Sod over poor soil is a short lawn. The Topsoil Estimator sizes the 4–6 in of topsoil a new lawn wants underneath.

Size the topsoil first

How many rolls of sod are on a pallet?

With 10 sq ft rolls and a 450 sq ft pallet, about 45 rolls. Farms that cut big rolls (24 in × 60 in and up) load fewer, longer rolls per pallet — the square footage per pallet is the number to confirm, and the estimator plans on 450.

How much does a pallet of sod weigh?

Between 1,500 and 2,000 lb depending on moisture and soil thickness — a serious truck or trailer load, and the reason delivery placement (driveway edge vs street) is worth deciding before the truck arrives.
