Overtime Calculator
Overtime is where paychecks get interesting — and where they get miscalculated. Enter your rate, your regular hours, and the hours you worked at time-and-a-half and double time, and see the week, the month and the year in gross pay.
Under US federal rules, non-exempt workers earn at least 1.5× after 40 hours in a week; some states add daily overtime, and some employers pay 2× for Sundays and holidays. Monthly = weekly × 52 ÷ 12; annual = weekly × 52.
How it works
Three buckets, three rates: regular hours × your rate, 1.5× hours × rate × 1.5, and 2× hours × rate × 2. Add them for the week; the year is the week × 52 and the month is the year ÷ 12. The blended rate — total pay ÷ total hours — is the single number that tells you what your time actually earned, and it is the fairest way to compare a heavy-overtime week against a straight-time one.
Formula & worked example
Formula: Weekly gross = (regular hours × rate) + (overtime hours × rate × 1.5) + (double-time hours × rate × 2). Monthly = weekly × 52 ÷ 12; annual = weekly × 52. Blended rate = weekly gross ÷ total hours worked.
Worked example: At $20 an hour with 40 regular hours and 10 hours at time-and-a-half: $800 + $300 = $1,100 for the week, $4,766.67 a month, $57,200 a year — a blended rate of $22.00 an hour across the 50 hours.
Frequently asked questions
How much is 10 hours of overtime at $20 an hour?
Time-and-a-half makes the overtime rate $30, so 10 OT hours pay $300. With 40 regular hours ($800) the week totals $1,100 gross — $4,766.67 a month and $57,200 a year if every week looked like that. Your blended rate across the 50 hours is $22 an hour.
What is the difference between 1.5× and 2×?
1.5× ("time-and-a-half") pays your rate plus half — $20 becomes $30. 2× ("double time") pays twice the rate — $20 becomes $40. Federal law requires 1.5× past 40 weekly hours for non-exempt staff; 2× is usually employer policy, union contract, or specific state/holiday rules.
Is overtime taxed more?
No — that is a myth with a kernel of truth. Overtime income is taxed at the same rates as regular income. A big OT paycheck can be withheld as if you earned that pace all year, which over-withholds in the moment, but it settles up at tax time.
Why is monthly not just weekly × 4?
Because months are not four weeks: a year has 52 weeks and 12 months, so the average month holds 4.33 weeks. Monthly = weekly × 52 ÷ 12 is the honest conversion — weekly × 4 quietly underpays your estimate by about 8%.
